University of Ibadan and OAU Student Leaders Reject Rice Palliatives from Tinubu, Call for Systemic Educational Reforms
Student union leaders from the University of Ibadan (UI) and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) have publicly denied claims of receiving rice palliatives from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration. They have also vowed to reject such offers if extended, emphasizing that such gestures fail to address the deeper challenges facing Nigerian students and the education sector at large.
Speaking on the matter, Damilola Isaac, the President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) at OAU, stated unequivocally that no rice palliatives had been distributed to student leaders in the institution. He further noted that even if such items were offered, they would be rejected outright. According to him, distributing rice or similar items does not solve the systemic problems plaguing Nigerian education. Instead, he called on the government to prioritize meaningful reforms, such as improving infrastructure, increasing funding for universities, and addressing the welfare of students and staff.
Similarly, student leaders from the University of Ibadan echoed these sentiments. They criticized any attempt to offer material items like rice as a form of palliative relief, arguing that it trivializes the struggles faced by Nigerian students. They stressed that such actions would only serve as a distraction from the pressing need for sustainable solutions to issues such as underfunded institutions, poor learning environments, and frequent disruptions in academic calendars.
Both unions emphasized that any intervention from the government should focus on long-term improvements in education rather than short-term handouts. They reiterated their commitment to advocating for policies that benefit all students rather than accepting token gestures aimed at a select few.
