Academic and non-academic activities in five government-owned tertiary institutions in Oyo State have been brought to a halt as workers embark on an indefinite strike. The strike, which commenced on Monday, March 10, 2025, was declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of all trade unions in the affected institutions.
The institutions involved include The Polytechnic, Ibadan; The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki; Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa; Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora; and Oyo State College of Education, Lanlate. The Guardian reported that the unions are protesting the non-payment of the minimum wage and the failure to implement a 25/35% salary increment approved for tertiary institution workers in other institutions since January 2024.
In a statement issued by JAC’s leadership, they expressed frustration over the state government’s neglect of their demands despite multiple meetings and assurances. “We have exhausted all avenues for dialogue. This strike is our last resort to demand what is rightfully ours,” the statement read.
As of now, there has been no official response from the Oyo State Government regarding the strike. However, stakeholders are urging both parties to return to negotiations to prevent further setbacks in the state’s education sector.
