Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade I was officially crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo in a historic ceremony that marked the first such coronation in 53 years. The event, which took place in Oyo, was attended by prominent figures including Governor Seyi Makinde, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, and a representative of President Bola Tinubu, Chief Adebayo Adelabu.
The coronation of Oba Owoade follows the passing of the 45th Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, in April 2022. The selection process was praised by many royal families in Oyo, with Col. Ramon Adebayo Agboluaje (rtd) from the Agbolua Royal Dynasty hailing it as a positive development that will bring progress to the town.
Governor Seyi Makinde addressed claims of interference in the selection process, asserting that Oba Owoade was chosen by the Ifa deity, the people of Oyo, and the state government. He challenged anyone with evidence of his influence to come forward. President Bola Tinubu, represented by Chief Adelabu, highlighted the Alaafin's relevance to the Yoruba people, quoting Obafemi Awolowo on the importance of understanding one's history and culture.
The event was also attended by other notable figures, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, Senator Yinus Akintunde, and the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams.
