Benue Community Bans Scrap Iron Dealers Amid Security Concerns

Gwer West Local Government Council in Benue State has announced an immediate ban on the activities of scrap iron dealers, popularly known as “iron condemn dealers,” across the entire local government area. The directive was issued by the council’s Executive Chairman, Hon. Ormin Torsar Victor, as part of efforts to tackle rising security challenges and restore peace in the region.

Hon. Torsar warned that anyone found engaging in scrap iron trading, particularly those transporting materials from conflict-affected or township areas, will be arrested and prosecuted according to the law. The council urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious scrap-related activities to security agencies.

“This measure is aimed at protecting lives and property. We call on all security agencies and members of the community to support the strict enforcement of this ban,” the statement signed by Timothy Ajieje, Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, emphasized.

The ban reflects growing concerns about the role of scrap metal dealers in facilitating criminal activities, including vandalism and theft, which have heightened insecurity in the area. Authorities have committed to enforcing the ban rigorously to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
