Lagos Government Suspends Planning Approvals Along Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road

The Lagos State Government has announced an immediate suspension of all planning approvals along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road corridor. This move aims to address concerns over the impact of the ongoing coastal highway project on Lagos’s urban development plans.

Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, stated that the suspension is necessary to realign the project with key development frameworks, including the Ode-Omi Action Area Plan, the Ibeju-Lekki Model City Plan, and the Lekki Comprehensive Master Plan. The Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority (LASPPPA) has been tasked with enforcing the suspension until further notice.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, spanning approximately 750 kilometers from Lagos to Cross River State, is a major infrastructure initiative designed to enhance regional connectivity and economic growth. However, the government’s decision reflects the need to ensure that the highway’s development does not undermine Lagos’s physical planning goals or disrupt the creation of a sustainable and organized urban environment.

This suspension highlights Lagos State’s commitment to balancing infrastructural development with careful urban planning to safeguard the city’s long-term livability and growth prospects. Further updates are expected as the government reviews the project’s alignment with its urban development policies.
