Tinubu Cancels June 12 Presidential Broadcast, Addresses Nigerians at National Assembly Joint Session
President Bola Tinubu has cancelled his planned nationwide presidential broadcast for Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day anniversary, opting instead to deliver his address during a joint session of the National Assembly in Abuja on Thursday, June 12, 2025. The decision was announced by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, citing the president’s confirmed attendance at the National Assembly joint session as the reason for the change.
The theme for this year’s Democracy Day is “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms,” reflecting the administration’s focus on institutional and structural reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic governance. President Tinubu’s speech is expected to emphasize the government’s reform agenda, national unity, and the collective responsibility of citizens and institutions in sustaining democracy.
In addition to the cancellation of the presidential broadcast, the traditional military parade originally scheduled for the day has also been cancelled without an official explanation. However, other Democracy Day events, including a public lecture at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, will proceed as planned.
This year marks 26 years since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, with June 12 designated as Democracy Day to honor the historic 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest in the country’s history. The president’s address at the National Assembly is set for 12 noon.
