Oyo State Government Issues Ultimatum to "Floating" Teachers: Return to Schools or Forfeit Salaries

The Oyo State Government has issued a decisive directive to 202 teachers currently not reporting to their designated schools, warning that their salaries will be withheld if they fail to comply immediately. These teachers, described as "floating," were not absorbed into the Post-Primary Schools Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) but have continued to receive remuneration despite their absence from their original postings under the Local Government Universal Basic Education Authorities (LGUBEAs) or the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB).

The stern warning was delivered by Dr. Nureni Adeniran, the Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB), during a meeting with Education Secretaries held in Ibadan. Dr. Adeniran underscored the disruptive impact of these teachers' continued absence on the board's operational efficiency, reiterating that their appointments remain unregularized due to their refusal to report for duty.

According to Dr. Adeniran, Governor Seyi Makinde had, as far back as 2022, directed these non-absorbed teachers to return to OYOSUBEB. He emphasized that defying this  order constitutes gross misconduct.

The OYOSUBEB Chairman has mandated the immediate compilation of the names and respective local government areas of the 202 affected teachers to ensure prompt enforcement of the directive. While some of the teachers reportedly did not meet the requirements for transfer to TESCOM, others were affected by a lack of vacancies within the commission.
