The political landscape of Nigeria saw a significant consolidation of power for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) following the by-elections held on Saturday, August 16, 2025. With results now being officially tallied and declared, the APC has emerged as the clear victor, securing the majority of the contested seats in an exercise that stretched across twelve states.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that the by-elections were held to fill vacancies in sixteen federal and state constituencies, as well as senatorial districts. The elections, which were noted for their use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), appeared to follow due process, though a full independent analysis is still pending. President Bola Tinubu has already extended congratulations to the winners and commended INEC for what he termed "peaceful polls."
According to the official results released by the electoral body, the APC won in a commanding twelve constituencies. This victory not only strengthens the party's hold on legislative power at both the federal and state levels but also serves as a significant first achievement for the newly elected National Chairman of the APC, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda.
The outcomes of the by-elections were not a clean sweep for the ruling party, however. The main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), managed to secure a victory in one constituency. Similarly, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) won two seats, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) took one.
