Tyler Robinson, 22, has been officially identified and taken into custody as the suspect in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. Authorities apprehended Robinson in St George, Utah, after his father recognised him from photos released during the manhunt. Initially hesitant to surrender, Robinson later agreed to turn himself in following guidance from a youth pastor who is also a U.S. Marshals officer, who urged his father to have Tyler stay in place until law enforcement arrived.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox detailed in a Friday press conference that Robinson had become increasingly politically engaged in recent years and had discussed Kirk’s scheduled visit to Utah Valley University with a family member. The governor also provided insight into the unique inscriptions found on bullet casings at the scene, which included provocative phrases and symbols. Investigators learnt from interviews with Robinson’s roommate that messages were exchanged about retrieving the rifle used in the shooting from a drop point and various details about disguising its presence and changing clothes to avoid detection.

Cox confirmed that Robinson arrived on campus driving a grey Dodge Challenger, matching surveillance footage from the university on the day of the shooting. The suspect was seen moving through stairwells and onto the rooftop from which the fatal shot was fired. After the attack, Robinson fled by jumping off the building and disappearing into a nearby neighbourhood, initiating a large-scale law enforcement search involving more than 20 agencies and thousands of tips.

FBI Director Kash Patel praised the swift response of investigators, noting they located Robinson within 33 hours of the shooting and arrived on scene within 16 minutes of identifying the suspect. Patel emphasised the ongoing nature of the investigation and the collaborative work between federal, state, and local officials. Retired FBI agents have speculated that Robinson likely practised extensively with the bolt-action rifle used, given the precision of the single deadly shot.

President Donald Trump publicly confirmed Robinson’s arrest during a Fox News interview, stating he believed with a "high degree of certainty" that Robinson was the shooter. Trump added that someone very close to Robinson had played a crucial role in turning him over to authorities and expressed hope that the suspect would face the death penalty. Trump also announced plans to attend Kirk’s funeral, describing the conservative leader’s death as a terrible loss.

Charlie Kirk, CEO and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot in the neck during a public debate event at Utah Valley University, attended by about 3,000 people. His death has reverberated across the nation, spotlighting the issue of political violence in America and prompting widespread condemnation.

The investigation into the shooting remains active as law enforcement continues gathering evidence. Authorities are committed to ensuring Robinson faces full prosecution for the crime.
