Ijesaland Chief Stripped of Title by Owa Obokun Over Alleged Land Grabbing, Misconduct
The Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, has stripped High Chief Adebola Orolugbagbe of his title as the Odole of Ilesa following allegations of land grabbing, misuse of office, and misconduct.
The removal makes Orolugbagbe the second traditional chief in Ijesaland to be publicly stripped of his title by the monarch over alleged criminal activities.
The paramount ruler's decision followed an investigation by a fact-finding panel he established shortly after ascending the throne, demonstrating his resolve to cleanse the traditional institution of corrupt practices within his domain.
Allegations against Orolugbagbe included the conversion of family land to personal property and abuse of his ceremonial office. The allegations were levelled by members from all branches of the Odole Owa Family of Ijesha Land to the monarch's Committee on Fact-finding, Peace and Land Disputes.
Following the panel's probe, Orolugbagbe's own family formally disowned him in a letter dated October 21, 2025, demanding that the chieftaincy title be revoked.
Oba Haastrup has moved quickly to replace the dismissed chief, installing High Chief Makanjuola Afolabi as the new Odole of Ilesa on October 27, 2025.
The monarch's action is part of a broader effort to restore integrity to the Ijesa traditional system. He previously removed the former Oba Odo of Ilesa, Busuyi Gbadamosi, for his role in the alleged theft of two community electricity transformers, an incident which led to Gbadamosi’s subsequent arrest.
Oba Haastrup has consistently warned that any chief found to be involved in criminal activities or oppressing the populace will be relieved of their position, reaffirming his commitment to standardising the inherited traditional system.
The monarch has also begun a process to review and regularise the appointments of several other chieftaincy titleholders conferred during the reign of his predecessor.
