Avalanche Buries Skiers at Austrian Resort; Multiple Rescued Alive

A powerful avalanche struck the Stubai Glacier ski resort in Austria's Tyrol region on November 27, 2025, burying multiple skiers and snowboarders in an off-piste area. Emergency teams rescued eight to nine individuals alive, with three hospitalised for minor injuries. Rescue operations involved over 250 personnel and continued for several hours before being called off with no fatalities reported.

The avalanche occurred around 9 a.m. local time near the Daunscharte Pass, a hazardous off-trail zone where the victims were skiing. This incident forced the closure of a nearby section of piste 9 for safety reasons. The skiers involved were reportedly skiing outside designated trails, a factor often linked to increased avalanche risk in mountain resorts.

Authorities swiftly launched a large-scale rescue operation, deploying helicopters, search dogs, and specialised personnel. Victims were pulled from the snow largely within a critical time window that significantly increases survival rates. Among those rescued, three were taken by air to a hospital in Hall in Tyrol for medical treatment.
