Mexican Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero Resigns to Take Ambassadorial Post

Mexican Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero resigned on November 27, 2025, to assume an ambassadorial position nominated by President Claudia Sheinbaum. The 86-year-old legal veteran, who has served nearly seven years as Mexico’s first nominally independent prosecutor, officially submitted his resignation to the Senate, marking the end of a pivotal chapter in Mexico’s justice system.

Gertz Manero’s departure comes amid expectations for a smooth transition in Mexico’s law enforcement leadership as the Senate prepares to ratify his new diplomatic appointment. He will represent Mexico as ambassador in a yet-to-be-named friendly country.

The former attorney general’s resignation carries significance beyond the change in personnel. His tenure was marked by both notable efforts against organised crime and controversy surrounding close ties with former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s administration despite the office’s designed political independence. His leadership helped extradite 55 drug traffickers to the United States, including high-profile targets like Rafael Caro Quintero, linked to the murder of a DEA agent in 1985.

Gertz Manero had remained in office after Sheinbaum replaced López Obrador, navigating the conflicting pressures from U.S. authorities and domestic political reforms. As he stepped down, he urged stronger coordination between state prosecutors and federal agencies.
