Oyo Hoteliers Appeal to Gov. Makinde Over Multiple Taxation and Extortion Practices

The Hoteliers Association of Oyo State has urgently called on Governor Seyi Makinde to intervene in what it describes as crippling multiple taxation and extortion activities that are threatening the survival of the hospitality industry in the state. At a press conference held at Davis Hotel in Bodija, Ibadan, the association lamented the arbitrary imposition of taxes and extortion by unofficial actors, which hotel operators say are driving up costs and stifling business growth.

The association’s president, Ayodele Ogundele, explained that hotels in the state incur several taxes, including value-added tax, sales tax, and property tax, among others. While affirming a commitment to paying legitimate taxes, Ogundele decried what he called “arbitrary and extortionate” levies, particularly from non-governmental actors such as consultants and certain associations, which often exploit hotels through unofficial means. He highlighted cases where hotel doors were reportedly chained shut for alleged non-payment of such taxes.

Oyo hoteliers are urging the government to enact a harmonised tax bill that would clearly specify payable taxes and eliminate duplicative or excessive charges that disrupt operations. The association also seeks protection against illegal extortion by unofficial entities, calling for a transparent and fair tax environment that fosters business growth and customer affordability.
