Tragic Crash on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Claims Two Lives as Anthony Joshua Sustains Injuries
British-Nigerian heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua narrowly escaped death Monday when the Lexus SUV he was travelling in as a rear passenger collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, killing two others and injuring several in a devastating accident that has shocked the sports world.
The crash occurred around 11 a.m. local time near the Danco Filling Station in Makun, close to the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound axis, just days after Joshua's high-profile knockout victory over Jake Paul on December 19 in Miami. Authorities confirmed five adult males were involved, with Joshua, 36, sustaining only minor injuries while two passengers—described by officials as male foreign nationals—died at the scene. Their remains were taken to Livewell Morgue in Sagamu.
Ogun State Police Command spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi stated, “The vehicle conveying Anthony Joshua, a Lexus SUV, was involved in the accident under circumstances that are currently being investigated. He was seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and [is] receiving medical attention. Tragically, two other passengers in the vehicle lost their lives at the scene.”
The Ogun State Government expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life. In an official statement, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Kayode Akinmade described the incident as “deeply unfortunate and painful”, extending “profound condolences to the families, friends, and associates of the victims” while noting Joshua “narrowly escaped death”. The government urged motorists to exercise caution, especially during the festive season, and prayed for the repose of the deceased and speedy recovery of the injured.
Joshua, a two-time unified world heavyweight champion with strong family roots in Sagamu, Ogun State, had reportedly been holidaying in Nigeria following his recent bout. He was evacuated by his security detail to an undisclosed hospital, where he is reported to be stable, conscious, and in contact with family.
Investigations continue, with police and FRSC assuring thorough probes into the cause. The boxing community and fans worldwide have sent messages of support to Joshua and condolences to the bereaved families.
