Nigerian billionaire industrialist and Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, has confirmed he will honour his $500,000 financial pledge to the Super Eagles despite the team’s elimination from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The national team suffered a 4–2 penalty shootout defeat to tournament hosts Morocco in the semi-finals on Wednesday night, following a goalless draw after 120 minutes of play at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. Although the initial reward was contingent on a victory, Rabiu announced on Thursday that the team’s performance earned the payout regardless of the final score.
In a statement released via his official social media channels, Rabiu expressed immense pride in the squad’s resilience and character during the high-stakes encounter. He emphasised that the financial gift is a tribute to the team's ability to unite and inspire the nation throughout their campaign in Morocco.
“You fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage and determination on the pitch,” Rabiu stated in a post on his official X handle. “Though it wasn’t meant to be this time, you have made every Nigerian proud. As a token of appreciation for your remarkable journey and effort, I am still going ahead to fulfil the pledge of $500,000 USD.”
The BUA Group Chairman originally announced a multi-tiered incentive package following Nigeria’s 2–0 quarter-final win over Algeria. The plan included $500,000 for a semi-final win plus $50,000 for every goal scored, with a further promise of $1 million and a $100,000 per-goal bonus had the team secured the trophy in the final.
Rabiu noted that the spirit shown by the players resonated deeply with Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, even if the ultimate goal of reaching the final remained elusive. He urged the players to maintain their focus as they prepare for the third-place play-off, describing their journey as a source of national celebration.
“Sometimes our best efforts don't bring the outcome we desire, but the spirit and unity you displayed truly matter,” Rabiu added. “I am going ahead with the pledge in recognition of your hard work, dedication, and the joy you brought to our nation.”
The gesture from the billionaire philanthropist follows similar messages of support from the Federal Government. Information Minister Mohammed Idris also commended the team, noting that they displayed "admirable grit" despite the penalty loss.
The Super Eagles will now look to secure the bronze medal in their upcoming third-place match, while Morocco advances to face Senegal in the final. Rabiu’s ASR Africa initiative continues to be a major supporter of Nigerian sports and social development as part of its broader continental mandate.
