The Federal Government of Nigeria has finalised plans to establish functional fire stations across all public tertiary institutions nationwide. This strategic initiative, spearheaded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in partnership with the Federal Fire Service (FFS), aims to provide a permanent solution to the recurring fire disasters that have threatened lives and destroyed multi-billion naira academic assets.
The Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Samuel Olumode Adeyemi, announced the formalisation of the project on Wednesday during the decoration of newly promoted senior officers at the Service headquarters in Abuja. He stated that the move is part of broader reforms to reposition the agency for enhanced operational readiness and public safety under the current administration’s "Renewed Hope" agenda.
According to the Controller General, the collaboration will cover all public universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. The initiative seeks to ensure the round-the-clock deployment of fire trucks and trained personnel directly within campus boundaries to minimise response times during emergencies.
“Through strategic engagement with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, plans are underway to establish functional fire stations within public tertiary institutions across Nigeria, safeguarding lives and national investments in education,” Adeyemi said during the ceremony. He emphasised that the Service is prepared to provide the necessary manpower and technical expertise to manage these specialised units.
