The Argentine midfielder bundled the ball home at the second attempt deep into stoppage time, cancelling out Tijjani Reijnders’ first-half opener. The result leaves Pep Guardiola’s side six points adrift of league leaders Arsenal, while Chelsea showed remarkable resilience following a week of internal turmoil.
The London club arrived at the Etihad Stadium under the temporary guidance of Under-21s head coach Calum McFarlane, following the sudden departure of manager Enzo Maresca just four days prior. Despite the upheaval, the visitors frustrated City for long periods, surviving 14 shots and an Erling Haaland effort that rattled the inside of the post.
City took a deserved lead in the 42nd minute when Reijnders powered a left-footed strike into the roof of the net. The goal followed a period of sustained pressure, though there was a hint of fortune as a deflected pass from Rayan Cherki fell perfectly into the Dutchman's path.
