The United States has delivered a significant consignment of "critical military supplies" to the Nigerian Armed Forces, marking a major escalation in security cooperation between Washington and Abuja. The handover, conducted on January 13, 2026, aims to bolster Nigeria’s ongoing offensive against insurgent groups and criminal banditry networks across the country’s restive northern regions.
U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed the delivery in a formal statement on Tuesday, noting that the shipment arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja via U.S. military transport aircraft. While the specific inventory and quantity of the hardware remain classified for operational security, official imagery showed personnel offloading sealed military crates destined for frontline units.
The arrival of the equipment follows a period of intensified military collaboration and high-level diplomatic engagement. According to AFRICOM, this latest support “supports Nigeria’s ongoing operations and emphasises our shared security partnership.”
The hardware transfer comes just weeks after a milestone Christmas Day airstrike conducted by U.S. forces in Sokoto State. That operation, which targeted Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants in coordination with the Nigerian government, represented the first publicly acknowledged direct kinetic action by the U.S. inside Nigerian territory in recent years.
