The Oyo State Government has officially scheduled the coronation of Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli and two other prominent Ibadan High Chiefs as beaded crown-wearing Obas. The ceremony, slated for April 3, 2026, at the historic Mapo Hall, has triggered intense political debate due to Alli’s status as a leading gubernatorial aspirant for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to a government memo dated March 26, 2026, the administration approved the elevation of High Chief Akeem Bolaji Adewoyin (Ekeerin Olubadan), High Chief Sharafadeen Alli (Ekaarun Balogun), and High Chief Kola Babalola (Ekaarun Olubadan). The directive was issued through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters and addressed to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja.
Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo, stated in the letter that the immediate conferment was necessary to "avoid unnecessary insinuation that the delay is deliberate and political." He further emphasised that the move is essential to "protect the Ibadan traditional institution" and aligns with the 2024 Chieftaincy Law as amended.
The inclusion of Senator Alli has drawn significant scrutiny, as the lawmaker currently represents Oyo South at the National Assembly and is widely viewed as a top contender for the 2027 governorship. Reports from The Guardian suggest that while other chiefs formally requested the elevation, palace sources claim Alli did not make a similar personal request, leading to speculation regarding the government's motives.
Reacting to the development, the APC Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, Wale Sadare, maintained that the coronation would not hinder the Senator’s political trajectory. As reported by The Punch, Sadare dismissed concerns of a conflict of interest, asserting that "Alli will attend his coronation on May 29, 2027, when he will, Deo Volente, be crowned the governor of Oyo State."
Legal observers remain divided on whether the elevation to a beaded crown-wearing Oba legally precludes a candidate from seeking elective executive office. However, the Olubadan's media aide, Adeola Oloko, confirmed that the palace has received the government’s communication and has formally notified the beneficiaries.
