Irish Cabinet Convenes Emergency Session as Fuel Blockades Cripple National Supply

The Irish Cabinet is meeting in an extraordinary Sunday session to finalise a multi-million-euro emergency relief package aimed at halting a six-day nationwide blockade that has pushed the country to the brink of a fuel crisis. Taoiseach Micheál Martin summoned ministers to Government Buildings this afternoon following a week of escalating tensions as hauliers, farmers, and independent contractors obstructed key refineries and distribution hubs.

The proposed "substantial" support measures follow a series of late-night police operations designed to reclaim critical infrastructure. Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly confirmed that special units, supported by the Irish Defence Forces, moved to clear blockades at the Whitegate Refinery in County Cork and Dublin Port in the early hours of Sunday. Commissioner Kelly described the situation as a direct threat to the state, noting that the disruption has severely hindered emergency services, including ambulance and fire brigades.

The unrest was triggered by a dramatic spike in petrol and diesel prices linked to ongoing instability in the Middle East. Protesters, largely operating under an unofficial collective, have demanded immediate price caps, arguing that the current costs are making transport and agricultural industries unviable. While the government has held consultations with established industry unions, it has so far declined to negotiate directly with the independent organisers behind the "slow-roll" convoys.

Minister for Finance Simon Harris is expected to announce a targeted fuel subsidy alongside direct payments to the worst-affected sectors. Government sources indicate the package will focus on providing a temporary buffer against global market volatility without undermining long-term climate commitments. "We recognise the acute pressure on households and businesses, and our response today will be both significant and fiscally responsible," a government spokesperson stated ahead of the meeting.

Despite the police interventions, protest spokespeople have warned that further action remains an option if the Cabinet’s offer falls short of their demands. Retailers have reported widespread fuel shortages across the Midlands and the West, leading to urgent calls from the Department of Environment for citizens to cease panic buying. The outcome of the Cabinet’s deliberation is expected to be published by 18:00 GMT.
