Romuald Wadagni, Benin’s Minister of Economy and Finance, has secured a decisive victory in the nation’s presidential election, according to provisional results released early Tuesday by the Autonomous National Electoral Commission (CENA).

Wadagni, 49, captured 94.05% of the vote in Sunday’s poll, effectively positioning him as the successor to outgoing President Patrice Talon. His sole challenger, Paul Hounkpè of the Cowry Forces for an Emerging Benin (FCBE), trailed significantly with 5.95% of the tally. Sacca Lafia, the head of CENA, announced the figures on national television, noting that the margin made the outcome "mathematically irreversible" based on more than 90% of ballots processed.

The election marks a significant transition for the West African nation as President Talon prepares to step down in May after a decade in power. Wadagni, an elite former Deloitte executive who has managed Benin’s treasury since 2016, campaigned on a platform of "quality growth" and continuity. He has pledged to build upon recent infrastructure projects while expanding social safety nets and addressing security challenges in the country’s north.

Opposition candidate Paul Hounkpè conceded defeat late Monday, offering "republican congratulations" to his rival. "Democracy requires mutual respect and the ability to rise above partisan divides," Hounkpè stated in a concession speech that called for national unity. His campaign had struggled to gain momentum after the main opposition party, The Democrats, failed to secure the necessary parliamentary endorsements to field a candidate.

Voter turnout was recorded at 58.75%, a figure that reflects a steady engagement despite some reports of lower participation in urban centres. International observers described the process as generally orderly and well-organised.

Wadagni is expected to be sworn in for a seven-year term, a duration established by recent constitutional reforms. The final results are now subject to confirmation by Benin’s Constitutional Court, which is scheduled to provide a definitive ruling within the coming weeks.
