Enugu Rangers have been crowned champions of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) for a record-equaling ninth time after a tense 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos on Sunday. The win secured the "Flying Antelopes" the league title on the final day of the 2025/2026 season.

Captain Chidiebere Nwobodo proved the difference in the high-stakes encounter, netting a goal in each half to seal the championship for Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side. The victory brought Rangers to a season total of 68 points, narrowly edging out Rivers United, who finished on 67 points after a 3-0 win against Katsina United.

The title win marks a significant milestone for the Coal City club, bringing them level with their oriental rivals, Enyimba F.C., as the most successful teams in the history of the league. Following the triumph, Enugu State Governor Dr. Peter Mbah lauded the squad, stating, "You have not only brought back the title, which you won in the 2023/2024 season, but also restored the glory of Enugu as the incubator and hub of champions."

While Rangers celebrated their return to the top of the Nigerian game, the final matchday delivered a devastating blow to last season's winners. Remo Stars became the first NPFL champions in league history to be relegated during their title defense. The Ikenne-based club finished their season with 47 points, level with Kwara United, but were ultimately condemned by an inferior goal difference.

The relegation was confirmed following a 3-1 victory by Kun Khalifat over Wikki Tourists in Owerri. Remo Stars had entered the day needing a win to guarantee survival but were held to a 1-1 draw by Bendel Insurance, conceding a late equaliser deep into stoppage time that proved fatal to their top-flight status. The club will return to the Nigeria National League after five consecutive seasons in the premier division.

Rangers and runners-up Rivers United are set to represent Nigeria in next season’s CAF Champions League. The relegated quartet for the 2025/2026 campaign is rounded out by El Kanemi Warriors, Bayelsa United, and Wikki Tourists.
