Mohamed Salah delivered a vintage second-half performance to inspire Egypt to a historic 3-1 comeback victory over New Zealand at BC Place on Sunday. The monumental win represents the nation's first-ever FIFA World Cup triumph, ending a 92-year tournament drought dating back to their 1934 debut.

The All Whites capitalised on slack Egyptian defending early in the first half. Defender Finn Surman broke the deadlock in the 15th minute, rising unmarked to power home a header from a precise Tim Payne corner. New Zealand preserved their 1-0 advantage until halftime as a sluggish Egypt struggled to generate fluid attacking sequences.

The technical superiority of the North Africans took complete control after the interval. Egypt equalised just before the hour mark when Mohamed Hany delivered an accurate cross to Mostafa Ziko, who expertly guided a close-range header past goalkeeper Max Crocombe.

Salah then seized momentum for his country in the 67th minute. The Egyptian captain linked up seamlessly with Ziko inside the penalty area before sweeping home a trademark left-footed finish to give the Pharaohs their first lead of the match.

The 34-year-old forward turned creator in the 82nd minute to secure the three points. Salah's corner kick from the right found an unmarked Trezeguet, who dove to plant a firm header into the back of the net.

The critical result propels Egypt to the top of Group G with four points, following their opening draw against Belgium. A single point in their final group stage match against Iran will mathematically guarantee the Pharaohs a place in the Round of 32.
