The Oyo State Government has issued an urgent public advisory alerting residents across all 33 Local Government Areas to a heightened risk of imminent flash floods. State officials activated emergency response contingency plans following a high-impact weather forecast from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency predicting intense thunderstorms and heavy surface runoff throughout June 2026.

The state Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources revealed that early-season rainfall is hitting relatively firm, compacted soil, which severely limits water infiltration. This geological condition exponentially increases immediate surface water volume, threatening to overwhelm roads and low-lying neighborhoods.

State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, stated that while public workers have intensified the desilting and clearing of critical drainage channels, municipal efforts alone cannot prevent localised disasters. He noted that temporary road overflows could rapidly deteriorate into severe, prolonged community destruction if public waterways remain choked with consumer waste.

Environmental authorities are strictly forbidding developers and individuals from executing unauthorised dredging or civil construction along natural water paths. The ministry warned that altering drainage routes alters critical drainage channels, directly violating state environmental laws and attracting severe legal sanctions.

Safety officials are urging residents in high-risk zones to take proactive steps to secure vulnerable household appliances, legal documents, and electrical items above expected floor water lines. Families are also directed to keep children and vulnerable individuals indoors during periods of severe downpours to prevent accidental drownings.

Transit safety remains a primary concern for the state as rainy conditions escalate. Motorists and pedestrians are cautioned against attempting to cross submerged roadways, which frequently conceal structural washouts and carry enough hydrodynamic force to displace vehicles.
