President Donald Trump unveiled a newly modified Boeing 747-8 at Joint Base Andrews on Friday, introducing a highly luxurious interim Air Force One that was gifted to the United States by the Qatari government.
The repurposed jumbo jet, officially designated as the VC-25B Bridge aircraft, replaces the classic Kennedy-era robin's egg blue aesthetic with a bold new design. The new paint job features a navy blue underbelly, a prominent red stripe, and a waving American flag across the tail fin.
"This plane was transformed into a flying White House at a level of luxury that nobody has ever seen before," Trump announced to an audience of service members after stepping off the aircraft.
The U.S. Air Force confirmed that the plane has entered service to provide secure, critical continuity for the president. Officials stated the aircraft will serve as a temporary "bridge" until long-delayed, purpose-built presidential models ordered from Boeing are delivered, which is currently slated for 2028.
The luxury aircraft, valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars, has generated bipartisan controversy since the administration accepted it last year. Critics have raised significant ethical and constitutional concerns regarding foreign gifts, though Trump has dismissed the pushback, stating that ownership will eventually transfer to his future presidential library foundation.
Military officials spent months retrofitting the aircraft with advanced security, defensive, and mission-essential communications technology. Air Force Chief of Staff General Ken Wilsbach expressed pride in the delivery, noting that a disciplined engineering approach meticulously prioritised core security requirements above all else. Despite the extensive technical upgrades, the Air Force minimised layout changes to the interior, preserving much of the original Qatari luxury finishings, leather seating, and wood paneling.
The aircraft will undergo immediate "commissioning flights" before carrying the president to the NATO summit in Turkey next month. Trump also revealed the jet will lead a massive flyover of Washington, D.C., on July 4th to celebrate the nation’s 250th Independence Day.
