The Nigeria Football Federation has placed Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme in charge of its secretariat as interim General Secretary after a sweeping leadership shake-up that also suspended the federation’s electoral process.
The move follows the resignations of NFF president Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the executive committee, according to official statements.
The National Sports Commission endorsed Ikpeme, who had been serving as the NFF’s deputy general secretary, to oversee the secretariat, while Dr Ademola Olajire was named interim deputy general secretary.
The NFF said in a statement: “Following Thursday’s resignations of Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau as President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Dr Mohammed Sanusi as General Secretary, and members of the Executive Committee, the National Sports Commission has endorsed Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, until now Deputy General Secretary, to oversee the NFF Secretariat as interim General Secretary.”
The leadership changes came as the NFF suspended preparations for its elective congress, which had been scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State, according to earlier reports. The cancellation opens the way for a fresh process after the proposed reforms are completed.
The shake-up has also affected the domestic leagues, with reports saying the chairmen and executives of the NPFL, NNL, NWFL and Nationwide League One have been asked to hand over.
