President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on Wednesday conferred national hero status on 16-year-old Kornelius Tulotokela Shimuafeni, making him the youngest recipient in Namibia’s history.
The honour was awarded during the Heroes’ Day commemorations at Heroes’ Acre. Shimuafeni received The Most Distinguished Order of Namibia, Third Class, carrying the title of Commander, along with a medal and N$200,000.
In May 2026, the Grade 7 learner from Omutundungu village in the Omusati Region was herding livestock when he saw a mother throw her nine-month-old twins into a pond. Despite not knowing how to swim, he jumped in and rescued both infants.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah praised the teenager’s selflessness during the ceremony. “He did not wake up that morning knowing that his courage would be tested. He did not act because cameras were watching. He did not act in expectation of recognition or reward. He saw human lives in danger, and he acted. That is heroism,” she said.
This was not Shimuafeni’s first rescue. The previous year he had saved two friends who fell into a well while herding animals.
The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology described the recognition as historic, noting that Shimuafeni’s actions demonstrated exceptional courage and serve as an inspiration to all Namibians.
The conferment formed part of broader Heroes’ Day events that included the recognition of more than 1,000 Namibians for contributions to the liberation struggle and national development.
