A commercial bus driver in Abia State, Onyekachi Ikpendu, has drawn widespread praise after recovering and returning more than ₦400,000 in forgotten cash to a distressed passenger at the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia.
The incident occurred after Mrs. Nkechi John, a local petty trader who boarded the transit vehicle from Uzuakoli, alighted at Ubani Market without her handbag. The misplaced bag held trade capital exceeding ₦400,000 alongside essential personal belongings.
Upon discovering the left-behind property inside the vehicle, Ikpendu secured the cash and took custody of it at the transit station rather than keeping it. John, having realised her loss shortly after stepping off, rushed directly to the terminal where she was reunited with her intact funds.
Speaking to journalists, Ikpendu explained that his moral principles and religious convictions guided his immediate decision to trace and return the money to its rightful owner.
"I am grateful and content with what I have, therefore, no amount of money I see now will move me to take what does not belong to me," Ikpendu stated, adding that he firmly believes honest labour brings lasting divine reward.
Expressing profound relief, John commended the motorist for his integrity and acknowledged the state administration under Governor Alex Otti for establishing the modern bus terminal, noting that centralised transport infrastructure made tracking the driver straightforward.
The gesture drew official commendation from the Abia State Government, with Commissioner for Transport Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu hailing Ikpendu’s conduct as an exemplary demonstration of civic responsibility.
"Our people are showing gratitude to His Excellency, Dr Alex Otti, for his good work and exemplary leadership in the state," Ukaegbu remarked in an official appraisal. "Honestly, the mindset of the people is changing towards doing the right thing even without being compelled."
Ukaegbu urged transport operators and residents statewide to emulate Ikpendu's character, citing honesty as an essential foundation for community trust and development.
