French football star Kylian Mbappé has publicly condemned an internet trend comparing him to an authoritarian ruler, calling the viral memes insensitive and irresponsible.
Speaking out against the imagery circulating widely across social media platforms, Mbappé remarked that the trend "shows a lack of political and human awareness in people."
The caricatures, which altered photos and generated imagery presenting the forward in totalitarian uniform and satirical propaganda posters, initially surged following online debates regarding player influence, squad leadership, and club hierarchy.
While online sports fan culture frequently relies on hyperbole and satire to critique top athletes, Mbappé emphasised that invoking authoritarian regimes trivializes real-world human suffering. He noted that reducing serious political oppression to dressing-room jokes demonstrates a disconnect from genuine historical and social realities.
Neither his club nor representatives have indicated whether formal takedown requests or legal steps will be pursued regarding the widespread digital imagery.
