More than half a million Russian military personnel have been killed in Ukraine since the Kremlin launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, according to an assessment released Friday by the head of the British Armed Forces.
Speaking to reporters, Air Chief Marshal Sir Richard Knighton, Chief of the UK Defence Staff, stated that the fatalities form part of approximately 1.5 million total Russian casualties—encompassing killed, wounded, and missing personnel. Knighton noted that the British estimates closely align with battlefield figures tracked and published by the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Beyond the high toll on personnel, Knighton disclosed that Moscow’s conventional forces have absorbed catastrophic material destruction on the battlefield.
Russia’s armed forces have sustained an "enormous" loss of military equipment, Knighton explained, detailing confirmed destruction of more than 10,000 armoured and protected vehicles, nearly 3,000 artillery and air defence systems, and upwards of 370 fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. Knighton did not release figures regarding Ukrainian military casualties or equipment losses during the briefing.
Western military intelligence analysts note that despite Moscow committing substantial reinforcements, the Russian military’s rate of territorial advance has slowed considerably in 2026, degenerating into attritional warfare.
The disclosures coincided with stepped-up Russian drone bombardments against Ukrainian civilian targets, including strikes against fuel depots in Kyiv and shopping centers in Pavlohrad. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the escalating assaults, stating on X that "Russia is systematically attacking places where it knows people will be spending their time going about their daily lives, seeking to maximise casualties, spread fear, and put pressure on Ukrainian society."
Neither the Russian Defense Ministry nor Ukrainian defence authorities provide verified, real-time disclosures of their own operational losses, and Russian officials issued no immediate comment on the British assessment.
