Brighton & Hove Albion shattered Arsenal’s immaculate start to the Premier League season on Saturday, delivering a commanding 3-0 demolition of the reigning champions at the American Express Stadium.
The defeat marked Arsenal’s first loss of the 2026–27 campaign and abruptly halted their bid for an eighth consecutive victory across all competitions. The result vaulted Fabian Hürzeler’s side to third place in the Premier League table on 10 points, moving within two points of the second-placed Gunners.
Sporting a commemorative deep-blue kit to celebrate the club’s 125th anniversary, Brighton dictated the contest from the opening whistle through relentless pressing and clinical counter-attacks. Stand-in captain Pascal Groß ignited the home crowd in the 31st minute, collecting the ball outside the penalty area and driving a precise low effort in off David Raya’s near post to claim his fourth goal in five matches.
Brighton doubled their advantage in the 44th minute, turning defense into attack seconds after Bart Verbruggen parried Bukayo Saka’s close-range effort. Diego Gómez capitalised on an open channel and picked out 19-year-old Greek forward Charalampos Kostoulas, who drove a low strike from distance past Raya into the bottom corner.
The hosts extinguished any hopes of an Arsenal fightback twelve minutes into the second half. Groß delivered an inviting corner toward the back post, where Spanish midfielder Chema Andrés rose unmarked on his full Premier League debut to head the ball home and make it 3-0.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta introduced second-half substitutes Viktor Gyökeres, Eberechi Eze, and 16-year-old Max Dowman, but the London club failed to breach Brighton’s backline and managed only one shot on target across 90 minutes. The three-goal deficit handed the Gunners their heaviest league loss since May 2023, which also came against Brighton.
Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler praised his squad’s competitive edge and tactical discipline against the titleholders.
"It was a special win, not only because we played the best team in England but because of the performance," Hürzeler told BBC’s Match of the Day. "I am really proud of my team. It's always important to enjoy these moments. We were horrible to play against."
