South Africa has announced significant relaxations in visa rules for Nigerian tourists and businesspeople, aimed at enhancing travel and fostering economic cooperation between the two nations. This decision was revealed by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa during the 11th session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission held in Cape Town on December 3, 2024, which was attended by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.
Nigerian tourists can now apply for a visa without the need to submit their passports, a move intended to expedite the visa application process and facilitate travel. Qualifying Nigerian businesspeople will have access to five-year multiple-entry visas. This allows for greater flexibility, enabling frequent travel without the hassle of reapplying for a new visa each time.
President Ramaphosa emphasized that these reforms are part of South Africa's commitment to creating a more favorable business environment and addressing challenges faced by companies operating in both countries. He noted that simplifying visa processes is crucial for enhancing trade and investment opportunities.
Previously, Nigerians experienced significant delays and denials in their visa applications, often leading to missed travel opportunities and reduced flight operations between Nigeria and South Africa. The new measures are expected to improve travel frequency and potentially increase the number of flights operated by airlines like Air Peace, which had previously downsized its capacity due to low passenger numbers linked to visa issues.
Travel experts anticipate that these changes will not only boost tourism but also strengthen economic ties between Nigeria and South Africa, marking a positive step in diplomatic relations as both countries celebrate 30 years of partnership.
