In a dramatic turn of events, the Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, for six months. The decision was made on March 6, 2025, following allegations of misconduct and her refusal to comply with the Senate's seating arrangement during a plenary session on February 20th.
The suspension was recommended by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen. The committee found Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of violating Senate rules, which they claimed brought public disgrace to the Senate and its leadership.
The controversy began when Akpoti-Uduaghan refused to occupy a new seat assigned to her, citing a violation of her privileges. She also submitted a petition alleging sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, which was dismissed on procedural grounds.
As part of her suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan will face additional penalties, including the withdrawal of her security aides, closure of her office, and suspension of her salaries and allowances. She is also barred from entering the National Assembly premises and representing herself as a senator during the suspension period.
Akpoti-Uduaghan has condemned her suspension as unlawful and contrary to natural justice, vowing to continue serving her constituents despite the setback. The Senate indicated that if she submits a written apology, they might consider lifting the suspension early.
