Chaos erupted late Monday night at Malir District Jail in Karachi after a series of mild earthquakes triggered mass panic, culminating in the escape of over 200 inmates. Authorities confirmed that 216 prisoners managed to flee the facility during the confusion, marking one of the most significant prison breaks in recent Pakistani history.

According to officials, the tremors led prison authorities to move inmates into the courtyard as a precautionary measure. During this temporary relocation, a group of prisoners reportedly overpowered guards, seized weapons, and launched a coordinated escape.
In the ensuing mayhem, one inmate was killed in a clash with security personnel, and three guards sustained injuries. A manhunt was immediately launched, and by Tuesday morning, authorities had recaptured 78 of the escapees. The remaining fugitives are still at large.
Provincial officials stressed that none of the escapees were convicted militants or considered high-risk terrorists. Nevertheless, the incident has sparked serious concerns about security lapses and emergency protocols at detention facilities.
In response, the Sindh government dismissed the prison’s superintendent and two other senior officials pending an investigation. “This was a serious breach of protocol and security,” a government spokesperson said. “We are conducting a full inquiry and will hold all responsible parties accountable.”
Authorities have issued an appeal to the remaining escapees to return voluntarily, promising sentence reductions for those who surrender peacefully. Conversely, officials warned that those apprehended by force may face terrorism-related charges.
As the search for the escapees continues, law enforcement agencies remain on high alert, with checkpoints set up across Karachi and surrounding areas.
