An early morning traffic accident in northern Washington state led to the escape of approximately 250 million honeybees, causing a temporary state of alarm and prompting authorities to issue public safety warnings.
The incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. Friday when a semi-truck hauling an estimated 70,000 pounds of honeybee hives overturned on Weidkamp Road, northwest of Lynden, near the Canadian border. The truck reportedly failed to navigate a sharp turn, causing the load of hive boxes to detach and spill onto the roadside.
Local emergency services responded swiftly, aided by more than two dozen regional beekeepers who worked through the day to contain the chaos.
Officials advised nearby residents to stay at least 200 yards away from the site due to the aggressive behavior of the freed bees. Several emergency personnel and journalists on the scene sustained multiple bee stings, but no serious injuries were reported.
The bees had just finished pollinating blueberry fields in the region and were being transported to South Dakota for further agricultural work. Experts estimate that the incident resulted in significant hive losses, though many were recovered and reassembled by evening.
Environmental specialists noted that while many bees may attempt to establish new hives locally, the sudden disruption poses risks both to the insects and to public safety.
Authorities declared the scene secure by Friday night and expressed gratitude to the beekeepers who helped recover much of the cargo under challenging conditions.
