Earlier today, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attended the coronation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadan in a grand ceremony held at the historic Mapo Hall, Oyo State. The event drew dignitaries from across Nigeria, including traditional rulers such as the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, and the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, as well as former governors and political leaders, highlighting its significance for Ibadan and the broader region.
In his coronation speech, Oba Ladoja called on President Tinubu to support the creation of Ibadan State, a longstanding demand among the people of Ibadan and enshrined within the Olubadan-in-Council’s position. He urged that the creation of the state be expedited, ideally before the 2027 general elections, emphasising the unity and aspirations of Ibadan residents for autonomy and development under a new state entity.
President Tinubu hailed the coronation as a historic and unique occasion, praising Oba Ladoja’s resilience and leadership qualities. Noting Ladoja’s past political career, including challenges faced during his impeachment as Oyo State governor, the President described him as a “rare gem in history” whose perseverance embodies the spirit of Ibadanland. Tinubu also reassured Nigerians of an improving economy and promised brighter days ahead for the country.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State officially presented the staff of office to the newly crowned Olubadan during the ceremony, which was met with widespread acclaim from attendees and residents alike. The coronation marks a new chapter in the traditional institution of Ibadan, following a peaceful and respected succession process. The event was not only a celebration of culture and tradition but also a platform for future aspirations centred on peace, progress, and prosperity in Ibadan and Oyo State.
