The death of Ruth Elton, widely regarded as Nigeria’s oldest missionary, has elicited heartfelt condolences from Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke. Elton passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at her family home in the Sharon compound, Alafia Bamin Quarters, in Ilesa, Osun State. She was just days away from turning 91 years old and leaves behind a legacy spanning over seven decades of dedicated Christian missionary work and community service across Nigeria’s central and southwestern regions.
Born in the United Kingdom on September 7, 1933, Ruth Elton was brought to Nigeria in 1937 by her missionary parents, Reverend Sydney Granville Elton and Hannah Elton. From a tender age, she embraced Nigeria as her home, dedicating her life to preaching the gospel, planting churches, and empowering rural communities in Kogi, Ondo, Oyo, and Osun states. Fluent in the Ebira and Yoruba languages, Elton was well-loved for her ability to connect deeply with the local people she served.
Throughout her ministry, Elton not only spread the Christian message but also focused on combating infant mortality and improving maternal health. She taught proper hygiene practices to women and advocated against harmful traditional childcare practices, such as infant force-feeding, which contributed to neonatal deaths. Her contributions to grassroots health initiatives are credited with significantly reducing infant deaths in the communities she served, especially in Okene, Kogi State.
In 1975, Ruth Elton made a profound statement of loyalty by renouncing her British citizenship to become a Nigerian citizen at a time when dual nationality was not legally recognised.
Governor Adeleke described Elton’s death as a loss to Osun State and the nation. In an official condolence message issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke noted that Elton’s life was one of extraordinary service that bridged gospel ministry and community health. He praised her decades-long commitment to uplifting society and urged those she left behind to honour her memory by continuing her selfless work.
“Ruth Elton’s passing leaves a heavy burden, but the legacy of her impact and the honour her contributions brought to humanity will forever be remembered,” Governor Adeleke stated. He prayed for the repose of her soul and encouraged the Christian community to remain steadfast, inspired by her relentless dedication to faith and humanity.
Having never married, Elton dedicated herself fully to her mission and is remembered as a mentor to many prominent evangelical pastors and gospel ministers in Nigeria. She also authored three Christian books focused on the Kingdom of God and the spiritual life.
