On World Teachers’ Day 2025, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, issued a call for urgent and decisive measures to address the critical global shortage of teachers. Celebrated annually on October 5, this year’s theme focuses on highlighting the pressing challenge of teacher shortages worldwide.
In a statement, the First Lady described teachers as indispensable architects of society who shape young minds, nurture dreams, and serve as mentors for future generations. Drawing from her own experience as a lifelong educator, she underscored the vital role that teachers play—not only within classrooms but also as foundational pillars in the development of nations.
Senator Tinubu emphasised that the escalating scarcity of teachers requires immediate attention from governments and stakeholders. She advocated for comprehensive efforts to empower educators, invest in their professional development, and encourage greater participation of young individuals in the teaching profession. The First Lady stressed that overcoming this challenge is essential to securing the future of education and the broader development goals of the nation.
Her statement acknowledged the importance of recognising teachers’ contributions and highlighted the need for sustained support for the teaching profession. She described teachers as “true heroes” whose dedication and commitment deserve national and global appreciation.
