In a landmark move towards peace and reconciliation, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, formally declared an end to the protracted crisis between the communities of Ile-Ife and Modakeke during a royal visit on Friday, October 10, 2025. The visit to the palace of the Ogunsua of Modakeke, His Royal Highness Oba Joseph Olubiyi Toriola, saw an overwhelming turnout of people from both communities, symbolising renewed hope and a peaceful future.

Addressing the crowd, the Ooni emphatically assured that hostilities between Ife and Modakeke would no longer be tolerated under his reign. He dismissed attempts by certain elements to rekindle the age-old conflict as acts of sabotage and dishonesty, urging youths and residents on both sides to embrace cooperation and development. “The days of clashes are over. Those spreading unrest are not true sons of our land but troublemakers. We must work together for progress and unity,” he stated firmly.

The Ogunsua of Modakeke expressed profound appreciation for the Ooni’s continued dedication to fostering peace and unity within Yorubaland. He commended the developmental strides made in Modakeke under his reign, including the recent completion of a modern palace facility, but emphasised the need for enhanced security arrangements to safeguard communities against banditry and other threats. Oba Toriola also called for concerted political efforts to see the emergence of an Ife indigene as governor, reflecting the aspirations of the local populace.

Prof. Olawunmi, the President of the Modakeke Progressive Union, described the occasion as historic and a testament to the outstanding leadership shown by both traditional rulers. He urged leaders and residents to resolve disputes amicably, advocating dialogue over antagonism to ensure lasting peace.

The royal visit was adorned with vibrant cultural displays and the participation of eminent traditional titleholders and community leaders. Celebrations underscored the collective desire to bury the past conflicts and chart a new course of harmony and joint progress for Yorubaland.
