Yousef Pezeshkian, the son of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, issued a high-profile reassurance on Wednesday regarding the health of the nation’s newly appointed Supreme Leader. Speaking to state-aligned media, the younger Pezeshkian, who also serves as a government adviser, characterised Mojtaba Khamenei as "safe and sound" despite lingering reports concerning injuries sustained during the recent transition of power.

The statement aims to quell mounting international speculation surrounding the 56-year-old leader, who has not made a televised public appearance since succeeding his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on March 8. The transition occurred under extraordinary circumstances following a devastating February 28 airstrike in Tehran that claimed the lives of the elder Khamenei and several high-ranking officials.

"The Leader of the Revolution is in good health and is actively overseeing the affairs of the state from a secure location," Yousef Pezeshkian told reporters in Tehran. He dismissed rumours of a leadership vacuum, though he did not provide specific details regarding the medical treatment the new leader is reportedly receiving.

Despite the official narrative of stability, reports from The New York Times suggest the situation is more complex. Citing intelligence sources, these outlets have indicated that Mojtaba Khamenei suffered shrapnel wounds to his legs and arms during the late-February strike. Iranian state television has cautiously corroborated this by referring to him as a "wounded veteran of the Ramadan war", a title seemingly intended to bolster his revolutionary credentials during a time of crisis.

The political stakes of Mojtaba's health are immense, as his appointment marks the first hereditary transfer of power since the 1979 Revolution. While allies like Russia and China have formally recognised the new administration, U.S. President Donald Trump has labelled the succession "unacceptable".
