Arsenal reinforced their Premier League title credentials on Sunday evening, securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over London rivals Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium. The win restores the Gunners’ five-point cushion at the summit of the table, responding decisively to Manchester City’s earlier pressure.
The encounter was defined by set-piece proficiency, a trademark of Mikel Arteta’s side this season. Arsenal opened the scoring in the 21st minute when William Saliba rose to meet a Bukayo Saka corner, directing a header toward goal that found the net via a deflection from Chelsea’s Mamadou Sarr.
Chelsea struggled for rhythm in the first half but found an equaliser against the run of play in stoppage time. A whipped delivery from Reece James caused chaos in the Arsenal six-yard box, leading defender Piero Hincapie to inadvertently glance the ball into his own net. The teams entered the break level, though momentum briefly appeared to shift toward the visitors.
The decisive moment arrived in the 66th minute through another dead-ball situation. Declan Rice delivered a pinpoint cross that bypassed a stranded Robert Sanchez, allowing Jurrien Timber to power a header home. Chelsea’s hopes of a second comeback were dashed four minutes later when Pedro Neto received a second yellow card for a late challenge on Gabriel Martinelli, leaving the Blues to finish with ten men.
The defeat leaves Chelsea in sixth place, complicating their pursuit of Champions League qualification. Reflecting on the result, Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca lamented the fine margins. "Against a team like Arsenal, you cannot afford to switch off on set pieces," Maresca said. "We competed well, but the red card and the goals we conceded from corners are difficult to take."
Arsenal now sits on 64 points from 29 matches, while Manchester City trails with 59 points and a game in hand.
