The United States military successfully recovered a missing crew member from an F-15E Strike Eagle downed over Iran, ending a high-stakes search and rescue operation in hostile territory. President Donald Trump confirmed the rescue early Sunday morning, describing the mission as one of the most significant recovery efforts in American history.
The officer, a weapons system officer holding the rank of colonel, was extracted from the rugged mountainous terrain of southwestern Iran. The rescue comes two days after his aircraft was shot down on Friday, 3 April, during a period of intense regional conflict. The pilot of the jet had been recovered shortly after the incident, but the colonel’s status remained uncertain until the Sunday morning operation.
"The Colonel is a highly respected officer and he is now safe," President Trump stated in a formal announcement via Truth Social. The President further characterised the mission as a "miraculous" success, involving dozens of aircraft and hundreds of special operations personnel who braved enemy fire to reach the downed airman.
Military officials reported that the colonel sustained injuries while evading capture for nearly 48 hours but is currently in a stable condition. Following his extraction, he was immediately transported to a U.S. military medical facility in Kuwait for further evaluation and treatment. The White House had previously withheld details regarding the pilot’s Friday rescue to ensure the safety of the ongoing search for the second crew member.
The loss of the F-15E represents the first American-crewed aircraft to be downed in hostile territory since the current conflict escalated five weeks ago. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps had previously claimed responsibility for the strike. Despite U.S. helicopters taking small arms fire and an A-10 Warthog being damaged during the search phase, no American fatalities were reported during the final recovery mission.
This successful rescue occurs against a backdrop of severe geopolitical tension. President Trump recently issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding that Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
