Cape Verde’s legendary goalkeeper, Josimar "Vozinha" Dias, is set for an emotional reunion with his mother ahead of his nation's next FIFA World Cup 2026 match. The 40-year-old, who captured global hearts with a heroic, clean-sheet performance against Spain, will be joined by his mother in Miami after United States authorities expedited her visa following widespread public interest.
The heartwarming development was confirmed by US House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, who coordinated with the US State Department, FIFA, and the government of Cape Verde to resolve the administrative hurdles. Jeffries announced on social media that all fees had been waived, ensuring the goalkeeper’s mother can travel in time for Cape Verde’s crucial Group H clash against Uruguay this Sunday.
"No mother should miss the chance to see her child make history," Jeffries stated, noting that he intervened after hearing the goalkeeper’s emotional account following the opening draw.
Vozinha became a viral sensation after making seven crucial saves in a 0-0 shock result against tournament favorites Spain on Monday. At 40 years and 12 days old, he also set a record as the oldest player to appear in a nation’s inaugural World Cup match.
Despite the professional triumph, the veteran goalkeeper was visibly moved during his post-match interviews. He revealed that his joy was bittersweet because his mother was unable to attend due to financial and visa-related complications. He also paid tribute to his late grandparents, who raised him and were unable to witness his milestone achievement.
"I cried after the game because I grew up with my grandparents when I was a kid, and they could not be there," Vozinha said after his Player of the Match performance.
Cape Verde, one of the smallest nations to ever qualify for the tournament, now prepares to face Uruguay as they seek to build on their dream start. With his mother officially expected in the stands, the goalkeeper looks to continue his historic campaign on the world stage.
