Liverpool came from two goals down to defeat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield on Tuesday night and make it three wins from three in this season's Champions League.
Villarreal looked set to cause an upset after taking a deserved 2-0 lead inside 30 minutes through Georges Mikautadze and Sergi Cardona.
The visitors took advantage of a much-changed Liverpool side. Mikautadze pounced after just four minutes when Virgil van Dijk miscued a header back to Alisson Becker. Cardona doubled the lead on 29 minutes after a fine team move.
Liverpool halved the deficit in the 36th minute when Alexis Mac Allister headed in from Kostas Tsimikas' corner. On the stroke of half-time, Ronald Araujo levelled with a header at the far post after a delightful dinked delivery from 18-year-old Rio Ngumoha.
Ngumoha provided the spark again after the break. He skipped past two defenders on the right and squared for Mac Allister to tap in his second on 65 minutes to put Liverpool ahead for the first time.
Three minutes later substitute Florian Wirtz completed the turnaround with a clinical finish into the bottom corner after receiving a pass from Cody Gakpo. It was Wirtz's first goal for the club this season.
Villarreal set up a nervous finish when Tani Oluwaseyi volleyed home in the 87th minute. Liverpool held on to secure all three points.
Ngumoha was the star of the night. Manager Andoni Iraola said he is becoming a more complete player.
"I am really happy with Rio. He is trying to improve everything that we try to correct," Iraola told reporters. "He is playing a lot more on the right and he has adapted really well."
"In the first half, especially the first 30-35 minutes, they have been much better than us. In the second half, especially the first 30-35 minutes, we were much better," Iraola said.
"I think when we've been under pressure and we had to go and leave everything, I think we've answered well. When we've relaxed a little bit at the beginning of the game, or when you score the 4-2, you think, 'ok it's done', it has cost us. You cannot relax."
Ngumoha, who became the youngest Liverpool player to register an assist in the Champions League, said he enjoyed the occasion.
"Individually I think I enjoyed myself tonight," Ngumoha said. "As I get older now, affecting games is really important. And today, to get two assists and help the team get the three points, there's nothing more I can ask for."
The victory moves Liverpool level with Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the league phase table with nine points from three games. Villarreal remain on three points and have now gone 17 Champions League matches without a win against English clubs.
Iraola had left out his three over £100 million forwards, with Alexander Isak, Bradley Barcola and Wirtz all starting on the bench ahead of Sunday's Premier League visit of Brighton.
