Former President Goodluck Jonathan has publicly condemned the state of Nigeria’s political environment, describing it as deeply rooted in betrayal and dishonesty. Speaking on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at the 70th birthday celebration of his former Chief of Staff and Edo State Deputy Governor, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, in Benin City, Edo State, Jonathan shared his personal experience with the betrayals characteristic of Nigerian politics.

Jonathan recounted the challenges he faced during the 2015 general elections, which culminated in his defeat. He disclosed that many political allies turned their backs on him during that time, highlighting that the political mood in Nigeria is dominated by inconsistency and falsehood. “You will find it difficult to see somebody who says the same thing in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening,” he said.

Jonathan singled out Oghiadomhe as a trusted ally, emphasising his rare loyalty and reliability in a political sphere otherwise fraught with deceit. He praised Oghiadomhe as someone “whose word you can take to the bank” and said the former deputy governor is willing to “take a bullet” on his behalf.

Speculation continues around Jonathan’s possible return to the political frontline in the 2027 presidential elections under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), though he has yet to make a formal declaration.
