Jackson’s Brace Powers Senegal to Dominant AFCON Opening Win

Senegal launched their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a commanding statement of intent, dismantling Botswana 3-0 at the Grand Stade de Tanger on Tuesday. The victory, fuelled by a clinical brace from striker Nicolas Jackson, immediately propelled the Teranga Lions to the top of Group D.

While Botswana's "Zebras" displayed early resilience, the sheer depth and quality of Aliou Cissé's squad eventually breached the defensive wall, leaving the Southern African side searching for answers.

The breakthrough arrived in the 40th minute after a period of sustained pressure. Ismail Jakobs delivered a pinpoint low cross from the left flank, finding Nicolas Jackson. The Bayern Munich forward, currently on loan from Chelsea, reacted with predatory instinct to steer a left-footed finish past Botswana goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko, who had previously kept his side in the game with a string of acrobatic saves.

Jackson doubled the advantage in the 58th minute, effectively ending the contest as a competitive spectacle. Capitalising on a sleek assist from Ismaïla Sarr, Jackson demonstrated sophisticated footwork before slotting a low drive into the bottom corner. The goal marked the first brace of the tournament, cementing Jackson’s status as a top contender for the Golden Boot.

Despite the scoreline, the night belonged in part to veteran Sadio Mané. The former Liverpool star set a modern AFCON record by recording six shots on target—the most in a single match since 2010—though he was repeatedly denied by the heroic efforts of Phoko. The Botswana shot-stopper finished the match with double-digit saves, preventing a significantly more lopsided result.

The final blow came in the 90th minute via Senegal’s bench. Substitutes Cheikh Sabaly and Cherif Ndiaye combined seamlessly, with Ndiaye sweeping home a cross to provide what commentators described as the "icing on the cake". The goal underscored Senegal's tactical depth, with even their late-game reinforcements outclassing the tiring Botswana defence.

"Our objective was to start with three points and a clean sheet, and the boys executed that perfectly," Senegal coach Aliou Cissé told reporters after the match. "We respect every opponent, but tonight we showed the focus required to go far in this tournament. Nicolas [Jackson] was exceptional, but this was a victory for the whole system."

The statistical dominance was stark. Senegal controlled 68% of the ball and registered a staggering 28 total shots compared to just four from Botswana. The Zebras, who are ranked 119 places below Senegal in the world rankings, struggled to sustain any offensive momentum, failing to record a single shot on target against Edouard Mendy.

With this result, Senegal leads Group D on goal difference over the Democratic Republic of Congo, who earlier secured a 1-0 win against Benin. The Teranga Lions are scheduled to face the Leopards of DR Congo in a highly anticipated top-of-the-table clash this Saturday, December 27. Botswana will look to keep their qualification hopes alive when they face Benin on the same day.
