Nigerian Captain Troost-Ekong Retires Ahead of AFCON

William Troost-Ekong, the captain who led Nigeria to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and was named Player of the Tournament, has announced his immediate international retirement.

The decision, which comes as the Super Eagles prepare for the next AFCON, was described by the centre-back as simply feeling like "the right time" to step away after a 10-year career.

Troost-Ekong, who earned 83 caps, cited the need to "pass the baton" and allow the next generation of players the opportunity to "write their own story," according to an interview with Sky Sports.

The announcement has sent ripples through the Nigerian football community, which was focused on achieving redemption after the painful 2023 final loss to hosts Ivory Coast. Despite the shock felt by many fans, Troost-Ekong maintained his decision was deeply considered.

"It feels like a chapter is closing. But I also feel happy, I feel proud," he stated, reflecting on his long association with the national team. He emphasised that being part of the Super Eagles had been a "big part of my identity" and that growing into the captaincy was an honour he could not have imagined at the start.

The defender disclosed that the idea of retirement had begun during the 2023 tournament itself. "I wasn't in the best relationship with the coach that we had at the time... So to be there, I was just trying to enjoy it as much as I could because I kind of said to myself, 'this would be my last tournament'," he recounted.

His departure follows a period characterised by intense external pressure, a hallmark of Nigerian football. Troost-Ekong acknowledged the difficult dynamic between the team and a highly passionate yet unforgiving fanbase and media. He described the environment as a "recipe for disaster when things don't go your way."

Troost-Ekong, who retired as Nigeria’s ninth-most capped player, admitted that he eventually learnt how to handle the heavy media scrutiny by trying to "absorb that and try to keep everyone level-headed" within the team's circle.

The former captain, however, insists the time is right for a transition. "It's time to step away and let the next generation and the boys I've been playing with for the last years give them a chance to write their own story," he confirmed.

Troost-Ekong's time with Nigeria spanned numerous major tournaments and achievements. He was a key figure in the squad that secured the bronze medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics and later helped the Super Eagles to third place at the 2021 AFCON.

His most remarkable contribution came during the 2023 AFCON, where he led the team to the final, becoming the competition’s highest-scoring defender in history in the process.

Despite this individual acclaim and being named Player of the Tournament, the 2-1 loss in the final led to massive fan backlash against certain players, including Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi.

Troost-Ekong maintains a strong belief in the capacity of the current squad to succeed. He stressed that the experience of losing the 2023 final served as a crucial lesson for the players on "how to play that occasion better when it comes."

He highlighted the maturity and sustained high performance of key players such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Wilfried Ndidi. The former captain expressed optimism that the team "will be unfazed now until that moment" and fully focused on rectifying past mistakes.

Troost-Ekong has promised to offer his support from outside the playing ranks. "If we have a chance to win the AFCON now in Morocco, I would still feel like I've been a part of that generation," he concluded, stressing that victory would provide the respect the current cohort of players deserves.
