General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), was confirmed as the new Minister of Defence by the House of Senate on Wednesday.
The swift confirmation came less than 48 hours after his formal nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who moved quickly to fill the critical vacancy created by the resignation of the former minister, Mohammed Badaru.
The Senate’s approval places a highly decorated military officer at the political helm of the Defence Ministry, tasked with strengthening the nation’s security framework.
The screening exercise commenced shortly after the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, read President Tinubu’s request during the plenary session.
The request urged lawmakers to consider and approve the former CDS as the successor to Mr. Badaru. President Tinubu’s letter, which was transmitted to the upper chamber on Tuesday, specifically expressed confidence in General Musa’s capacity to "strengthen Nigeria’s security framework" and "reposition the ministry" to tackle the pervasive national security threats.
The vacancy in the Ministry of Defence arose following the resignation of Minister Mohammed Badaru on Monday. Official statements indicated that the former minister stepped down due to unspecified health reasons.
