Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured their place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a disciplined 2–0 victory over the Desert Foxes of Algeria at the Stade de Marrakech on Saturday. Second-half goals from talismanic striker Victor Osimhen and forward Akor Adams proved decisive, setting up a high-stakes encounter with tournament hosts Morocco.
The quarter-final clash, which pitted the tournament’s most prolific attack against its most resolute defence, remained deadlocked during a physical first half. While Nigeria controlled the tempo and registered five shots on target to Algeria’s zero, the North Africans’ defensive structure, anchored by goalkeeper Luca Zidane, initially held firm. The deadlock didn't last long into the second half; just two minutes after the restart, Osimhen rose to meet a cross and headed home the opening goal.
Nigeria doubled their advantage ten minutes later. Osimhen turned provider, threading a ball to Akor Adams, who rounded Zidane to slot the ball into an empty net. The victory marks a significant milestone for the three-time champions, who have now reached their 16th AFCON semi-final.
Algeria’s exit marks their fifth quarter-final defeat in their last seven knockout appearances. Despite a resilient campaign that saw them concede only one goal prior to Saturday, the Fennec Foxes struggled to test Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, failing to register a single shot on target throughout the ninety minutes.
The match ended on a fractious note, with several Algerian players involved in a late altercation with their Nigerian counterparts as frustration mounted in the closing minutes.
Coach Vladimir Petkovic’s side had entered the match with high expectations after a dramatic extra-time win over DR Congo in the Round of 16. However, they found themselves unable to break down a Nigerian defence that has looked increasingly solid.
Off-field narratives had threatened to overshadow the build-up to the match, with reports surfacing regarding a bonus dispute within the Nigerian camp. However, Nigeria Football Federation officials confirmed the matter was resolved prior to kickoff, allowing the players to focus on the task at hand.
Osimhen’s performance, in particular, demonstrated a renewed sense of unity, as the Napoli striker was seen tracking back deep into his own half to assist in defensive duties.
Nigeria will now pivot to their semi-final fixture against Morocco on January 14, 2026. As the tournament reaches its business end, the Super Eagles remain one of the favourites to clinch the title, fuelled by an attack that has now produced 14 goals across five matches.
