Labour Party Lawmakers Urge Politicians to Unite Against Insecurity and Economic Woes

Labour Party (LP) representatives in Nigeria's House of Representatives called on all politicians Sunday to form a united front against escalating insecurity and economic hardships.

The caucus, led by Rep. Afam Ogene from Anambra state, accused President Bola Tinubu's administration and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of prioritising 2027 election plans over citizens' welfare.

The statement highlighted budget failures, kidnappings, and protests as signs of a nation in crisis.

Rep. Afam Ogene issued the statement on behalf of the LP caucus, decrying what he called a "special economic zone" where "everyone and everything now has a price."

He pointed to ₦17.5 trillion spent in 2024 on a Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) pipeline-security contract amid stalled projects and unpaid contractors protesting at the Ministry of Finance.

Ogene said the executive appears "underwhelming," the judiciary faces questioned decisions, and the legislature lacks moral fibre to hold leaders accountable.

The lawmakers noted chaotic scenes across Nigeria, including retired police officers blockading the National Assembly and daily kidnappings during the approaching festive season.

"With 2025 drawing to a close, most ministries, departments, and agencies have failed to implement even 10 per cent of their capital budgets," the statement read.

Ogene urged Tinubu to set aside re-election ambitions, as "such ambitions should not supersede the urgent governance demands the country desperately yearns for."
